Student Success Strategies

The purpose of this course is to optimize learning through equipping students with effective study techniques. This course also provides an introduction to personality styles that will be encountered in the workplace and allows students to practise appropriate and productive interaction between the various styles. Emphasis is placed on the types of communication that work best with each style in order to achieve a good working relationship and to manage and resolve conflicts that arise. Students are also introduced to strategies for setting personal goals, managing time, and managing the stress that results from study or work and builds on positive group dynamics and setting expectations for student success

Fundamentals of Computers

This course presents an introductory look at Windows 10 and its interface, tools and features. You will learn about the fundamentals of navigating and personalizing the interface, organizing files and folders, using electronic mail, protecting a computer and searching for information. This course relies heavily on practical hands-on activities that allow you to learn the concepts by practicing them on a regular basis.

Keyboarding

This course gives the student an introduction to the fundamentals of keyboarding. This course will help the students reinforce their English language skills and develop their ability to key and compose information, develop the proper keyboarding techniques and skills, The gradual pace of this course will help the students develop both speed and accuracy while applying the proper keyboarding techniques and position. Students will also develop their proofreading techniques, and improve their word processing techniques in a windows environment. Students must achieve a speed of 50 words per minute.

Business Computer applications

The first component of this course is designed to introduce students to basic computer literacy through familiarization with the components that make up a computer.  Students will also look at the Windows operating system to learn how to manage a computer on a regular basis. The second component of this course will teach the basic skills required to work with a variety of business documents including the following MS Office Products Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The third and final component is designed to introduce students to considerations for living online.  Students will look at what the Internet is and how e-mail has made a huge impact on communicating with others, as well as look at how to find information on the Internet and avoid risk to personal security while online.

Medical Language I

Medicine, like other professions, has its own language. Students will learn to work with the specialized terminology of medicine including the pronunciation and spelling of terms to describe medical circumstances and situations. Students will learn through descriptions, illustrations, and exercises to identify the major anatomical features and systems of the body and the common pathologies, which can adversely affect these systems.

Medical Language II

This course continues from Medical Language I with the same delivery format and further areas of specialisation in medical terminology.

Medical Transcription

Transcription is integral to the efficiency of the medical doctor’s practice, providing the documentary records on patient cases that the physician is required by law to maintain. Students will be introduced to the process of medical transcription using actual dictated medical data, in different accents. The emphasis of the module is on speed and accuracy. This course also familiarizes the student with various medical letters and reports routinely dictated by the medical profession. The student utilizes transcription equipment or software to practise the correct formatting, spelling, and grammar used in these reports. Medical Transcription is taught based on the completion of the Medical Language I and II courses as to reinforce medical terms and procedures.

Medical Office Procedures

Students will examine the necessities required for operating a smooth and efficient office environment. Topics covered include basic filing techniques, telecommunications, time management, and organizational skills and the use of general office equipment. Students will also learn the techniques of both manual and computer based appointment scheduling by learning to assess and prioritize calls (telephone triage) to most effectively schedule the physician’s limited time.

Medical Software and Billing

All businesses need to invoice for services rendered and collect their revenues as quickly and efficiently as possible. Doctors’ revenue comes primarily from the provincial medical insurance scheme. Students will be introduced to, and practice the procedures, requirements, and codes promulgated by the provincial government for the invoicing and recovery of the doctors’ fees from the provincial medical insurance plan. Course time is also dedicated to tutorials to learn the Medical software system.

Electronic Health Records

Implementing electronic health records (EHRs) in Canada is a pan-Canadian initiative involving many stakeholders involved in the delivery of health care. Electronic health records (EHRs) are secure and private lifetime records that describe a person’s health history and care. They are made up of information from a variety of sources including hospitals, clinics, doctors, pharmacies, and laboratories. This information is critical for treatment and is accessible to healthcare professionals. In the course, students are introduced to work with simulated health records and learn the ins and outs of the system as they apply in a medical office. It provides a thorough understanding of EHR tasks and functional benefits that is continuously reinforced by actual EHR experiences. Students are updated with the latest EHR rules, regulations, and innovations, electronic orders and results, workflow examples, and billing codes.

Clinical Procedures

Students will learn techniques and procedures used to prepare and administer basic procedures and tests utilized in medical offices.

CPR and First Aid

Students will participate in the Standard CPR and First aid training provided by a recognized external agency. Upon completion of this training students will receive the standard CPR certification.

Professional Skills

This course is designed to equip students with interpersonal skills identified by employers as essential for success in the professional world. Using a variety of instructional methods including case studies, group exercises, and discussion, students learn and practice key communication skills.

Career and Employment Strategies

In addition to learning career-oriented skills, students learn how to get a job in their chosen profession. Our Employment Services department will assist the graduate in resume writing, as well as preparing for job interviews. Our staff is sensitive to current job market trends and the needs of employers in each local market. Our graduates receive guidance and training to use career tools that help job seekers build a better resume and cover letter, manage an online portfolio, hone interviewing skills, and develop a personal brand online. Students will have the use of a computer lab which has unlimited Internet access, as well as job search resources. Facilitators will also be made available to advise on job finding resources, interview skills and techniques and to carry out mock interviews. This course also looks at the planning, preparation, execution, and follow-up stages of an interview: How people find jobs; Employer expectations; Presenting an enthusiastic attitude; Focusing on the right job and the hidden job market; Transferrable skills; Thank you letters; Effective telemarketing; Handling objections, self-confidence, and self-esteem; Individual counselling and coaching.

Practicum

For this module, students will be placed in actual workplaces related to their field of study and will be expected to act as a regular employee for the five weeks in order to gain the valuable real-world experience that so many employers seek.  Students are encouraged to find their own work experience placement; however, once placed, continuation in that placement is a mandatory diploma requirement. The business organization does not pay for the services of the student during the practicum.
